Details
Kenya has long been struggling to develop a modern healthcare system for its citizens. Although the government’s expansion of the system over the last few decades has been commendable, since the early 1990’s there has been a declining trend in the health status of the population. Mortality rates have started increasing again, with the reemergence of old diseases, chronic malnutrition and HIV/AIDS being the major causes. Kenya's healthcare problems are exacerbated by illiteracy, widely dispersed communities, poor sanitation, and tribal customs and traditions. Moreover, the rapidly increasing population and demand for healthcare far outstrips the ability of the government to provide comprehensive health services with its limited financial resources.
We work in hospitals, orphanages, social work and care centers, and always with the objective of helping the local community. We also have a variety of Medical placements available where you could work in a hospital, clinic or teaching hospital, in any one of a number of departments. You don't need any qualifications (unless otherwise specifically stated), just a lot of caring, loving and comforting.
We have many placements where you can help those who can't help themselves - it's immensely satisfying and expands your understanding of a different culture and some of the hardships in life.

Project Brief
We have partnered with some of the biggest and most prestigious hospitals in Kenya to provide our volunteers with a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the striking contrasts between medical practice in the West and the Third World. Whatever your qualifications, you will given a multitude of responsibilities and be very busy, overcrowding being the biggest challenge faced by the hospitals.

Volunteer Involvement
- *Volunteers would be able to observe health professionals in the maternity and orthopedic wards and assist them when needed. - *As the hospital has so many patients, volunteers are needed to organize patients into relevant cues, and help in creating a system that will free the doctors to attend to the patients' needs instead of trying to maintain order. - *Most of our hospitals are well-known for their specialized eye unit. Volunteers would have the opportunity to observe eye-specialists performing eye surgeries and learn from experienced medical doctors. - *Outreach programs in which health professionals and volunteers go into rural areas to give the needed medical care to communities that do not have accessible health care facilities. - *The orphanages offer opportunities to become involved in helping with the teaching of the children.

The Hospitals
There are several orphanages in Nairobi and Mombassa that we are involved with.
These children come from backgrounds that have been affected by HIV/AIDS, abuse, poverty or illness.
These children are in need of love and attention.
Many of them are developmentally delayed and need extra attention in order to promote their development. The children's ages range mainly between 4 and 10 years.
The type of work volunteers are allocated depends to an extent on their own abilities and capabilities, which is understandable given that there are dealing with patient health and safety.
Normally work will be from 9-5 Monday to Friday.
However, sometimes they work evenings or nights, sometimes over weekends, etc.
